Da-Qing Tongbi coins are a series of machine-struck copper coins from the Qing dynasty in China, produced between 1906 and 1911. The coin in the image is a 10 Cash coin, minted during the reign of the Guangxu Emperor (1875-1908).
Key features of the coin:
Front (Obverse): Features a detailed imperial dragon coiled around a flaming pearl, a symbol of power and authority.
Back (Reverse): Includes both Chinese and Latin text. The Chinese characters "大清銅幣" (Dà Qīng Tóng Bì) translate to "Copper Coin of the Great Qing". The Latin text "TAI-CHING-TI-KUO COPPER COIN" also refers to the Qing dynasty. The Chinese characters "光緒年造" (Guāngxù nián zào) on the top translate to "Made in the Guangxu period".
These coins were a part of the imperial government's effort to create a unified national currency system, replacing older provincial coinages and cast cash coins.
