The maple leaf design was created by G.E. Kruger-Gray and first used in 1937, remaining unchanged until 1967. In 1967, Canadian artist Alex Colville designed a special reverse side depicting a rock dove to commemorate Canada's centennial. This was the only time the 1937 maple leaf design was not used for the penny before it was discontinued in 2012.
