Byzantine mosaic cross made in Florence, Italy. Italian artisans craft these exquisite pieces using a traditional Florentine technique, which involves cutting thin slices of Murano glass cane and placing each individual piece on the gold-plated cross.
The art and technique of Byzantine mosaics has not changed since they were first made in the early 5th century in Ravenna, Italy. The process resumed and flourished again in the 19th century in Florence, Italy. Each strand of brightly colored enamelled glass is cut and joined together to form original and distinctive designs. The painstaking work of creating Byzantine mosaics is limited by a dwindling number of skilled craftsmen.
