In 1819, during the Bunsei era, the painter Zengai, a Buddhist monk, was recalling the taste of the wild boar pot he had eaten the day before. He was sketching the words spoken by a fishmonger who had just shown him a carp in a barrel at the back entrance of the temple.

*

A hundred years earlier, in 823 during the Jōgan era, Kūkai, also known as the Great Master Kōbō Daishi, was granted the Eastern Temple (Kyoto) as his main training ground by Emperor Saga. It was to be a temple for the transmission of the esoteric teachings of the Tang Dynasty's Shingon Buddhism. There, he met a woman alone at the Sōgeishuchiin.

The book includes an essay by architect Tadao Ando at the end, where he states that "the beauty of Japanese gardens lies in the placement of stones in the rock garden."
